The Evolution of Woman at Hansen & Gretel | MBFWA Backstage Beauty

The Garden of Eden served as the backdrop for Hansen & Gretel’s Resort ’19 collection, inspired by the evolution of woman. The runway beauty looks mirrored that evolution, with both the hair and makeup teams creating a series of three looks progression from understated and natural through to the bold and the sexy.

“We’re really working with Ainsley [Hansen & Gretel designer Ainsley Hansen]’s progression of the female,” KMS Hair Global Artist and Creative Director Garreth Lenagh tells me. “Her influence and inspiration behind the collection was the evolution of woman.”

The first of three looks sees models taking to the runway with hair styled as close to their natural texture as possible. “We’re not taking it too far away from what they already are- we wanted to make them the best version of themselves,” says Garreth. “We’re working with the girls’ natural waves, natural cowlicks, natural fringes. We’ve worked with a little bit of KMS Playable Texture and enhanced all of their natural attributes.”

The second look, similarly, took its cues from nature, with Garreth creating low ponytails and half ponies secured with rope textured string as opposed to a regular elastic. “It was really important, given the Garden of Eden theme and the idea of this “Eve,” that we worked with and included a raw texture- something a little bit more natural. The string and the rope just tied it all in.

“What we’ve then moved into is the grungey curl which is that day two, day three, little bit 3am curl.” The hair is prepped with KMS Therma Shape Shaping Blow Dry, then the hair is tonged in alternating directions and set with Therma Shape Hot Flex Spray. The curls are then worked through with a wide toothed comb before Tame Frizz Oil and Hair Stay Working Hair Spray are added to define the curls. A left side part is then created as hair is scrunched, twisted and physically sewn at random to gather sections of hair at the nape of the neck. To finish, Hair Play Dry Wax is worked into the roots. The result? “That day three, messy texture,” says Garreth. “It’s feminine and fierce at the same time.”

That same idea of evolution was applied by the Clinique makeup team, with each model taking to the runway wearing one of three makeup looks.

The first look, “Eve,” places the emphasis on healthy, glowing skin with Moisture Surge, Even Better Glow and Up-Lighting Liquid Illuminator each playing a key role in giving the skin a naturally radiant, “your skin but better” glow. Brows are feathered using Just Browsing Brush-On Styling Mousse, while lips are washed with a subtle tint courtesy of the Almost Lipstick in Black Honey.

The second look sees things dialled up slightly, with the Pretty Easy Liquid Eyelining Pen delivering a classic wing and Lash Power Mascara adding definition to top and bottom lashes. Look three embraces the colour and drama of the modern woman, with the Big Blue Chubby Stick Shadow Tint and Galaxy All About Shadow Quad delivering intense colour to the eyelids.
