Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock served as inspiration for Thurley’s Resort ’19 collection, a theme that translated into an ethereal runway beauty look.
“I took that inspiration on board,” says Makeup Director Tre Dallas for 3ina. “We want the models to look really youthful, like the schoolgirls running about in the film. Their cheeks are flushed as though they’ve been running or are lost.”
Base makeup was kept minimal, with Tre and his team favouring a “your skin but better” approach and putting a real emphasis on skin preparation. “We’ve cleansed the skin really beautifully, worked moisturiser into the skin and applied the 3ina Eye Mask.” That need for hydrated, dewy skin called for a hydrating foundation, with Tre nominating the 3in1 Foundation as his foundation of choice. “I’s a primer, a moisturiser, and also delivers great coverage which makes it great for everyone.”
Rather than contouring, Tre favours a highlighting technique to add definition and glow to the high points of the face without any harsh lines. “I’ve mattified the chin and just allowed the glow to come through the foundation on the cheeks and the rest of the face,” Tre tells me. “This way I don’t need to contour as we’ve still highlighted the high planes. It’s essentially the opposite of contouring but the principle is the same.”
Ethereal, almost incandescent eye makeup tied in with the collection’s theme, with Tre applying a glistening cream eyeshadow to the very centre of the eyelid then offsetting it with a matte burnt orange shadow on either side- this way, the runway lights catch the cream shadow and bathe the eyes an an almost glossy sheen. Blending is key here, with Tre explaining that “there’s no hard lines. The focus has been on really blending everything well.”
For the lips, a mixture of colours and textures were used to create a three dimensional effect as opposed to a flat matte. “We’ve applied the colour as more of a stain. I’ve pushed an orange lipstick into the lips, then applied a nude lip colour using a brush to buff the product into the lips, as the goal again is to avoid any harsh lines,” says Tre. “The key product here is the Lip Vinyls. The trend for a while has been thick mattes, but I think we’re moving towards these more comfortable finishes and textures now. With wear, the gloss finish fades and leaves a stain in its wake.”
