Is SILVER The Secret To Beautiful Skin?

There is nothing that upsets my skin more than a combination of stress, poor sleep and overindulgence.

With this in mind, I spend the lead up to the festive season each year scouring the shelves for the next big thing in skin, from the quick fixes to the long-term healers, from blemish treatments to detoxifying masks, looking for the miracle skin salve that will save my skin from a summer of spots.

Is silver good for your skin?

In early October, my search led me to heavy metals- namely, silver. Colloidal silver has potent anti-bacterial properties, working to essentially suffocate bad bacteria. Unlike our silver jewellery, colloidal silver are tiny particles, undetectable to the naked eye, suspended in water, which makes it safe to apply topically and compatible with the human body. In skincare, silver can work to kill acne-causing bacteria, heal wounds, repair damaged tissue and treat scarring- meaning it ticks all of my party-season-skin-saviour boxes.

This lead me to ask: Is silver the secret ingredient we’ve been missing in our skincare?

To answer my question, I started trialling a new product by Omorovicza: the Silver Skin Saviour. For transparency, at the time of writing I have been using this product twice weekly in the four weeks since it arrived, and Omorovicza is a brand I have used and loved for just upwards of 12 months (their iconic Queen of Hungary Mist has reached cult status for good reason).

Everything I have done this month would have, ordinarily, wreaked havoc on my skin- working to deadline, wearing heavy makeup for extended periods, applying false tanning agents to my face and consuming more alcohol and sugar than usual. I genuinely believe that a twice-weekly application of this mask has played a huge part in saving my skin (I would ordinarily only apply a mask once a week, however I felt that my skin was able to benefit from this twice-weekly without irritation). I’m very much in tune with my skin and can sense when a breakout is about to occur, so whenever I felt so much as a slight post-party tingle, on went the Silver Skin Saviour. At risk of tempting fate, I have survived the first month of “party season” spot free.

Despite being a blemish-clearing powerhouse, Silver alone is not enough. This particular mask also contains a number of my favourite ingredients, all of which I have talked about at length on both this website and on my Instagram- Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) which I think of as a “booster” for other active ingredients, Salicylic acid, a BHA which dissolves grime and bacteria buried deep within the pores, and Glycolic acid, an AHA exfoliant that reveals a brighter, more even complexion.

A metal that serves a purpose far greater than accessorising, Omorovicza’s Silver Skin Saviour has convinced me that perhaps silver really is the secret to beautiful skin.
