Where last year’s Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival brought us graphic eyeliner, the new year introduces us to “floating liner” under the creative direction of the festival’s new Makeup Director, Sarah Laidlaw.
While fashion week beauty may not translate into the most wearable street looks, backstage beauty (much like runway fashion) gives us our first look at the trends we’ll be wearing during the year. Rather than the editorial looks we see on the runway, however, they’ll be pared back for the everyman by the time they make it to us.
Case in point- Laidlaw’s “floating liner.” While we may not necessarily be wearing this runway look verbatim to the office, we can take this as a sign that precise, graphic liner is a trend to watch this year with the sleek lines of gels and liquids replacing the smudged, smokey look left behind by the kohl of previous years.
Brave enough to recreate floating eyeliner from home? Although your instinct may direct you to draw in the very centre of the lid, you’ll need to work up from the crease to avoid losing the line once you’ve finished working- about half way between the brow bone and crease will make this look stick. Pare it back with brushed up brows and minimal mascara to keep this precise line looking fresh and youthful.
Working with festival hair and beauty partner Priceline Pharmacy, colour was injected into this look in the form of almost fluorescent watermelon pink lips. Created using NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick, the finish was matte without looking flat thanks to fresh, dewy skin rather than the heavy cream contouring that often gets teamed with a matte liquid lip.
All products used backstage at this year’s 2018 Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival are available in store and online via the festival’s Hair & Makeup Partner, Priceline Pharmacy.
